Over time it can crack allowing for air leaks. This will greatly decrease blowing/suction ability of the unit, therefore this part should be replaced. This genuine OEM pre-filter in your vacuum is the first line of defense against larger debris and particles, preventing them from clogging the main filter and improving overall filtration efficiency. Positioned inside the dust bowl, you will know it is time for a replacement when the pre-filter appears visibly dirty or clogged, leading to reduced suction power and airflow. To remove the pre-filter, simply press the dust bowl release button on the handle, detach the dust bowl, and take out the filter from within. When installing the new pre-filter, securely attach it to the filter before placing it back into the dust bowl. It is advisable to replace the filter every 6 to 9 months, depending on usage frequency. Keep in mind that the pre-filter and filter are sold separately.

It will collect the dust and debris that the Prefilter was not able to gather. Its purpose is to catch the dust and small debris from entering the motor and damaging it. Once this filter becomes dirty and clogged it should be discarded, and replaced with a new one.
