The drive belt on the trusty GE dryer, bought used from a GI in Germany about 40 years ago and donated to our relatives when we returned to the States finally broke and I airmailed them a new one.
The repair was simple with my mechanic relative handling the tools. Total time about 25 minutes.
Previous repairs to the venerable machine with parts obtained freom Part Select and shipped to Germany: new drive motor and drum bearings.
It was simple to get drum out. I took all screws holding top and door out with out problems, then released the drive belt. It took some wiggling to get the drum out. I then was able to get at the rear elements. Taking the wires off the thermostat came off with a little persuasion. Removing shaft from drum took some stretching as I was doing the work by myself. I would suggest that a helper be used for the removal and replacement of the shaft. Reassembly was easy. Just reverse of the above.
The screen had holes in it and was leaking lint into exhaust pipe.
Just removed old tray and installed new tray.
I was completely surprised that in less than 24 hours the new part was at my door! This is the kind of service every company should strive to supply to the customer,and the delivery fee was regular 3-5 day delivery. A job well done !!!!
The part received had about 6" of the screen not bonded to the frame. I used clear epoxy and a 1/8" dia. dowel wrapped in saran wrap. after applying the epoxy to the screen/frame interface, the wrapped dowel was clamped to the frame. After the epoxy cured I removed the fixture and peeled off the saran wrap. The fix was a complete success and was undetectable. 2 part repair. I replaced the front drum slide kit in about 20 minutes. It was better but still made lots of noise (was quiet for about 20 minutes then started back) so I ordered the rear drum bearing kit & a new belt. Replaced them when parts arrived. The video was great (the instructions with the parts were poor). However, my model had a circlip holding the bearing to the mount in the heating element & the drum did not come out until I removed the 3 torx screws in the drum & the bearing remained attached to the heating element. The new bearing kit was the one shown in the video & it all went back together easily but the belt was impossible to get on from the front. My friend helped & we removed the back access panel (had to remove the dryer cord to get the panel off). Belt was easily fitted & thus far (1/2 hour of use so far) the dryer is quiet.

I love the Partsselect.com youtube videos. The man in those videos rocks!!! I did the repair of my rear drum bearing kit exactly as he showed me in his video and it was perfect. I have spread the word on facebook and around work about Partselect.com and friends and coworkers are already checking it out. Hey, everyone loves a good thing. I suggest that you do not be afraid, you CAN do it. Tear that baby apart and save yourself some money.
First of all, I am a women...I read where it was probably my rear bearings so I ordered the part, it came in just right, then I replaced it put it all back together, and with the computers help, got it going, belt back on and all and then turned it on and walah it still made a loud noise. Shucks, so I read more and it said it could be the front bearings which I should have tried first but didn't read it first. Ordered part and put it on and wallah, that wasn't it. The noise sounded like the paper in a bicycle spoke so I checked the fan. There was the problem. The fan had so much dryer lint behind it it was forcing it against the housing making a noise. Cleaned it removed all the new unnessary parts and re-boxed them and put it back together but just before I put it together the door fell and two wires came loose so I plugged them back in and put the wrong one in the wrong place cause when I plugged the dryer in sparks went everywhere!!!! I need a man now!!! Scared of electricity!! Sure wish I knew if the noise was fixed :).
Checked out problem found belt broke and order part from part select and when it got in I replaced the belt and then found pully bad too. so I order that part from ya'll and it tok less than 5 mint to install. everything went very well and I and my wife are very happy with everything. unplugged dryer,removed air duct,,remove( top of dryer) by removing the two back screws.... removed two screws under (fornt top lid),laid top to the side. ...Now remove ( front of dryer) remove,two screws near the( top on the inside)...lean dryer back, and remove outsidescrews at the bottom)..the front should come off. ..located small square opening in the back of the dryer release clamp from drum ,...put belt around drum... put drum and dryer back together...(relace any electrical wires removed if any..remove (rear bottom plug panel)..you can now see the lower inside of dryer....make sure belt is level on drum by rotating...place belt on lower pully,... lift tension(spring pully) on to belt.. replace cover..
nd removed it from the unit. 5. replaced drum bearings 6. reassembled everything in the same order I took it off.
Be sure to mark any wires you may disconnect to ensure you connect them back correctly. Was a bit frustrating at times, but made it through and there is no more squeek.
After Taking The Dryer Apart, I Can't Find These Parts .
After taking the dryer apart and not finding anything that looks like the one I have in this box that I ordered, I got the right part and dryer is working find.
After having a friend who repairs appliances come and diagnose the problem, I was able to find the parts I needed very easily at PartSelect. They came quickly and I removed the front panel, followed the instructions (they were not very detailed) and also had help reading some of the other posts from people on the website. I replaced the parts and the dryer is now quiet and running fine.
Dryer would not start and the smell of an electrical part burning.
What to do if you have a load of wet laundry at 23:00, the dryer won’t start, and you have no spare start switch. Removed rear access panel and discovered the wire from terminal #2 (goes to heater coils) on the start switch had melted and disconnected. The start switch showed signs of overheating but not melted. Removed the switch and found the switch’s actuator button was jammed in the ‘in’ position (dryer won't start). The switch was a friendly one in that it was possible to disassemble it. Most switches today are molded/glued together, but this one could be pried apart. The contacts inside were still in fair condition and, after dressing them, the switch was reassembled. The actuator button had a burr that was filed off and the switch action worked fine. All of the 1/4" male QC contacts on the switch were cleaned with a wire brush. The burned wire was cut back about 6” and a new piece of 14ga wire was spliced in with a wire nut. A new 1/4” QC terminal was crimped to the wire and all wires were re-attached to the switch. This fix would probably last for a long time to come, but I bought a new switch and installed it and will keep the old switch as a backup. p.s. The load of laundry was dry by 02:00.
