Compactor stuck in lower position
Moved the compactor out from under cabinet and unplugged the powercable.Laid compactor over on its side Removed the top (4 screws) and base plate (3 screws) as well as the coverplate for the motor(3 screws)Found that large drive was broken in half. Used two screwdrivers to start split ring then pliers to pull it off the rest of the way.
Removed the drive gear and the washer.
Used a nail to drive out the pin for the smaller drive gear kit. Removed and replaced with new, used new pin to lock it on to the shaft. Changed out the bearings and washers on one powerscrew, put chain back on. Then was then a simple matter to put the new gear back on the chain then slide the whole thing back on the drive shaft. Replace the washer then slip the split ring back in place and seat it home with the pliers. Greased chain, gear drive and powerscrew. Put all covers back on with the screws. Pushed button it worked.

Roper Trash Compactor Directional Switch
★★★★★
★★★★★
15 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS11744742
Manufacturer Part Number WP777811
The function of the directional switch on your trash compactor is to ensure the ram lowers to compress your trash, then returns to the top position. If your trash compactor does not complete this task, will not stop at the end of the compacting cycle, or is noisy during operation, you may need to replace the directional switch. Be sure to disconnect your trash compactor from the power source before completing this repair. This is a fairly easy repair. After you open the control panel of the compactor, all you will need to do is unplug the old switch from the electrical wires, and plug the new switch in.

Trash Compactor ram wouldn't lower
I pulled the trash compactor out from under the counter.

I took out the four screws that kept the top cover in place to expose the ram.

The gear shafts were turning but the ram would not lower, at first I though the ram drive bolts were stripped and it wouldn't engage the shaft. Then I realized there was a mechanical directional\limit switch at the top that controlled the power and direction the gear shafts were turning, this switch was broken.

Just had to take off the front plate that was held on by a number of screws and replace the switch that was held on by two more screws. It had five wires attached to it, the new switch was clearly labeled as to which color wire went where.

Install NewDrive Gear Kit,( I also added,2 poor nuts and all 4 wheels)
My compactor is quite heavy, I moved it onto the kitchen floor unplugged and removed the cover plate from the bottom exposing the drive gears. The small (pinion ) gear was stripped as well as a section of the drive gear. I followed the video and removed the (fulthy) ram. The interior filth was so great I removed all parts to my garage and spent a lot of time cleaning them especially the ram.By the time my parts arrived, it was all clean and ready to go. I had also found that one of the power nuts was broken and had ordered new wheels and power nuts. Assembly was straight forward and it works like new now, Read more...

This wheel assembly, or roller assembly, is for a trash compactor. The kit includes two wheels that are approximately 1 inch in diameter each. The wheels allow the trash compactor container to roll in and out of the appliance. You may have to replace the wheel assembly if the container does not roll smoothly. To access the existing wheel kit on your appliance, uninstall appliance from the cabinet, depress foot petal to lift the container off its track, and remove the container from the tracks. This kit is an OEM part sourced from the authentic manufacturer factory.

Compactor out of line and would not shut off.
Pulled compactor out on a piece of cardboard. Used socket set to take top off and evaluate the problem. Power nut was not holding on one side. We ordered two power nuts. Decided to repair only the unlevel side. Fast and easy and cheaper than a new compactor. Whirlpool compactor is 28 years old and working like a charm. Roper Trash Compactor Power Nut
★★★★★

PartSelect Number PS11744741
Manufacturer Part Number WP777533
This part is a power nut, and it is intended to be used in conjunction with trash compactors. The function of this nut is to fasten to the side of the ram where it is threaded. When the power screw rotates, it is fed through the power nut, which pulls the ram down to compress the trash. This part is just over an inch in diameter, and is just one inch thick. This part is white and made entirely of plastic. The reason for needing to replace this part is if your compactor ram gets stuck, or if it does not stop at the end of the compacting cycle.

Both parts needed replacing. Could not find a replacement until you.
Pulled out old screws. Replaced with new screws.
Very easy.
Cannot thank you enough. Sears said the parts were not made anymore. We were upset as rest of compactor was fine, but we had a torn guard and a cracked handle. Price of a new compactor was a fortune. But thanks to you. LEss than $50 good as new.
Someone needs to tell sears they are really missing out. You had a shelf we needed about 4 months ago and it was exactly what we needed,so we knew if anyone could help us it would be you. You were right on.
Thank you so much

Roper Trash Compactor Drive Motor
★★★★★
★★★★★
1 Review
PartSelect Number PS3652693
Manufacturer Part Number W10439651
This drive motor is for trash compactors. The drive motor turns the gears and chain that raise and lower the compactor ram. If your trash compactor will not start or will not stay on during the compaction cycle, you may have a defective drive motor. The start or run switch is used to supply power to the motor to initiate the compaction cycle. If the windings in the motor are open or if the motor centrifugal switch is open, the unit will not start. To check for a defective motor, you will need to remove the unit from the cabinets and disconnect the power.
