The heating element (Flat Can Heating Element 5400W, Heating Element, Whirlpool Dryer Heating Element, Dryer Heating Element) provides heat to the dryer. It is metal and measures 10.5 inches long, 7.5 inches wide, 2 inches deep. The element attaches to the heater housing. This part can break as a result of wear and tear. This can be material fatigue or prolonged high temperature exposure. If broken your clothes may not dry because of a lack of heat. It must be replaced when there is no longer continuity between the terminals. First check the thermal fuse on the blower housing before deciding to replace the heating element.

Dryer motor runs, but no heat
To reach the heating element you only need to open the back cover of the dryer (about 8 nut-head screws). Remember to disconnect the power.

To remove the heating element there are two small nut-head screws. Remove the two electric wires. Then you can pull the heating element away.

You can check the heating element with an ohm-meter or visually inspect it to see if the heating element spiral wire is broken.

Don't hurry to dispose the old element. My model includes a small electric safety part. You'll need to transfer it to the new heating element (that comes without it)..

Good luck.

PartSelect Number PS11746337
Manufacturer Part Number WP8544771
The 5400W, 240-volt heating element is supplied directly by the manufacturer for use in various models of dryers. It is responsible for generating the heat needed to dry your laundry effectively. It is found within the dryer housing, behind the drum. It consists of a coiled wire made of high-resistance material. The wire heats up when an electrical current flows through it and then transfers that heat to the surrounding air. This hot air is then circulated through the drum during the drying cycle. If the heating element becomes faulty, it will be unable to carry out this function leading to poor heating, damp clothes, and high energy usage.

This dryer heating element produces heat to dry clothes and is located in the rear of a dryer. If the heater element is burned, the dryer does not heat or over heats, or clothes are taking too long to dry, replacing this part could solve your problem. The tools needed for this repair project are a Phillips screwdriver, putty knife, and needle nose pliers. To repair, first remove the main top of the dryer and ground strap at the rear. Disconnect the two wire harnesses and remove the screws that hold the front panel to the cabinet, in order to pull out the front panel. Now that you have access to the inside of the dryer, refer to the manual for further installation instructions and detailed guidance. Remember to unplug your appliance from the power source before beginning this repair project.

This part is a heater, but may also be known as a heating element, and it is meant for your dryer. This is where the heat is generated during your machine cycle in order to properly dry your clothing. This model is a 5500 watt, and has three coils. If your heater is broken, that usually means there is a break in the coil element. If you are having trouble drying your clothes, you may want to check for a thermal cut out or a blown thermal fuse. For this repair you will need a number two square bit, a Phillips screwdriver, and a flat-head screwdriver.

Dryer wasn't heating properly, drying took too long.
Removed back of dryer with electric nut driver. Lots of screws. Removed old heating element to better access wires and thermostats. Removed baffle at end and transferred to new heater element. Transferred thermostats to new element, reconnected wiring in correct order. Installed new heater element in correct position using tab to locate. Replaced back of dryer. Reconnected dryer vent. Toughest part was squeezing out of space after reconnecting dryer vent. Unfortunately, too short for my weight. Read more...

Dry stopped heating - still had good air flow
I was about to purchase a new dryer because of the age of my dryer and not wanting to hire someone to fix it. After a little web research, I saw several do-it -yourself stories indicating this was a very easy repair.

This was an extremely easy repair and it save me lots of $$:
(1) Disconnected power
(2) Opened the top of the dryer
(3) Disconnected wires to temperature sensor.
(4) Used a 1/2" socket wrench with extension and a drill to remove 2 screws holding down the temperature sensor
(5) Removed 1 screw holding down the heating element.
(6) Removed wires connected to heating element and pulled out old element.
(7) Reassembled new element.
(8) Turned on empty dryer for 30 minutes to burn off smell from the new element.

Worked like a charm!

Installation Instructions

Timer won't advance for auto-sensing cycles. Low Heat.
First I unplugged the dryer from the wall outlet. Then, removed the access panel in the lower front (held on by 2 screws near the floor). Then, I removed the black plastic air duct (held by 3 screws) in front of the blower. Then, with a Sharpie marker, next to each wire terminal lug, I labeled on the chassis the COLOR of each wire where it plugs on to a terminal lug (for proper wiring re-assembly later). Then, thru the lower front, I reached into the lower left rear of the dryer to remove the heating element assembly from its metal duct (held by 3 or 4 screws) - it slides down a bit, then it is easily removable. I layed the element on the floor in front of the dryer - all wiring still intact. Then, using the NEW HEATING ELEMENT and SENSORS ordered, I assembled them to match the original, re-using screws off of the old unit - and moving the wiring one-by-one from the original to the new assembly. I then installed the new heating element assembly into the duct at the lower rear of the dryer. I then replaced the 2 sensors on the front metal panel of blower housing, with new parts from my order, re-using the original wiring and screws. Then I re-installed the black plastic duct onto the front of the blower. Then, on the top of the dryer, I dissassembled the control panel from the rear, by removing 5 screws. I then found the resistor mounted on the back of the timer, and replaced it with the new one. Since the new resistor did not come with terminal lugs crimped on its wires, I had to cut the terminal lugs off of the original resistor and solder them onto the new resistor. I then reassembled the control panel. I then plugged the dryer back into the wall outlet and did a test run with no clothes. IT WORKED !! Then I reinstalled the lower front access panel and ran the dryer with wet clothes. IT WORKED !! Read more...
