Gibson Refrigerator Compressor Start Relay
PartSelect Number PS426380
Manufacturer Part Number 216594300
The compressor start relay attaches to the compressor in your refrigerator. If your refrigerator will not start, one of the most common parts to fail is the compressor start relay. Sometimes called the controller, this device is used to boost the compressor until the unit is running. Other common symptoms connected to start relays include: refrigerator will not start, will not cool, is making a clicking, humming or buzzing sound, or the compressor itself is warm to the touch. You may also smell a burnt plastic odor if the relay has failed. Shake the relay and listen for any rattling, as this is a sign that it is faulty.

The compressor would not run.
I removed the cover, used a multimeter to test the compressor circuit, and found the compressor start relay to be defective.
Ordered a new one and installed it when it arrived.

Gibson Refrigerator Filter - Drier
PartSelect Number PS464532
Manufacturer Part Number 5303305677
A filter-drier in a refrigerator has two essential functions. The first is to absorb system contaminants, such as water, which can create acids. The second is to provide physical filtration. This means trapping moisture, small metal chips, and dirt found in the refrigerant gas. If your refrigerator motor is constantly running, but the refrigerator is not getting cold, the issue could be due to a damaged or faulty filter-drier. Faulty filter-driers are sometimes the cause for abnormal freezer compartment temperatures and partially frosted evaporators. This filter-drier is approximately 11 inches long. Remember to disconnect the power from your refrigerator before beginning this repair.

Rear of upper shelf would freeze, while the rest of the freezer was dripping wet
We opened our freezer last week only to find the bottom 2/3 was barely cold, while only the rear of the upper shelf was cold. In fact, it was covered in frost, despite being a frost-free model. Our frozen veggies were slushy, not rock hard, and our frozen juices were all liquid. We defrosted the freezer, plugged it back in, but immediately noticed that we didn't hear the 'whhoooooosh' that you typically hear when you close the freezer door. After 30 minutes, the rear upper shelf was frosty again, but the rest was still at room temp. We figured the freezer was a goner, so we started looking at new freezers. I headed online to see if I could fix it, and I eventually found this site. I had learned online that these symptoms can be caused by either a bad capacitor, or a bad controller (which the capacitor plugs in to). I guess you can't necessarily tell which of the two parts is defective, so I chose to order/replace both of them. I ordered the correct parts from partselect.com, and they alerted me that Frigidaire has a new replacement part for the capacitor. When the parts arrived (quickly, ftw!), I unplugged the freezer and snipped the two wires leading to the controller. Next I unplugged the controller from the compressor housing. I spliced the replacement controller's wires into the freezer's wires (using my own wire nuts...as none were included with my order :( ). I snapped the new controller onto the compressor mounting, and then plugged the capacitor in. I plugged the freezer back in, and it was time for the moment of truth. The interior light of the freezer came on, and I could hear the compressor 'humming'. I could hear it humming before the repair, so the big test was to see if it got cold. I was nervous because the freezer DIDN'T make the 'whoooshing' noise right away, but after just an hour, the 'test' mug of water was already turning into ice. It was fixed!!!! If you have these symptoms, you CAN do this!!! Unplug the freezer. Cut two wires. Unplug the controller. Splice two wires. Plug in the new controller. Snap in the new capacitor. DONE!!! Read more...

NOT COOLING
First download schematic from frigidaire.com and watch a few youtube videos on fixing refrigerators .At first my guess was the timer was stuck on the defrost mode .However after studying the schematic I checked to see if the power was being sent to the compressor through the starter ptc .The 110 v was there after pulling off the connector .Also the condenser fan was on confirming this . however the compressor was stone cold .the compressor has 3 inputs whose resistances across all seemed good (see youtube videos) so it was probably the ptc starter or the 15microfarad capacitor .I changed the capacitor first -not the problem .then the ptc starter .immediatey the compressor started warming and after a few minutes cold air was being blown in .Very satisfying ! loud hum from compressor, cycling overload switch, no cooling.
I could hear a loud hum from the compressor motor cycling on/off every 5-10 seconds. Pulled the capacitor and relay switch from the compressor. Checked compressor terminals with ohmmeter, no shorts to ground so it was ok. A gravely substance rained out of the overload relay switch when I removed it, so I assumed it was bad. Didn't need to check the capacitor as it was only another $20 or so to replace. Also didn't notice any oily residue that would signify a coolant leak, so assumed the system was still pressurized. New relay switch and capacitor plugged right in, no tools needed. Re-secured the assembly with it's original keeper clip wire and I was done. Plugged it in and made sure it was cooling properly before replacing the various back cover panels. Like a new reefer! Couldn't have been easier. Just be careful with the capacitor when you remove it. It could hold a lethal electric charge. Read more...
